New Dungeons & Dragons books

Recently, my geek side won out and I purchased a copy of the new Dungeons & Dragon books.  I began to read the Players Handbook today and while glancing at the credits, I read this:

Disclaimer: Wizards of the Coast is not responsible for the consequences of splitting up the party, sticking appendages in the mouth of a leering green devil face, accepting a dinner from bugbears, storming the feast hall of a hill giant steading, angering a dragon of any variety, or saying yes when the DM asks, "Are you really sure?"

Already this book has harkened me back to the days of yore, hanging with some of the best friends in the world, (Heather, Mike, Drew, Curt, Jen AKA: Peanut "the fcking" convict Gully Dwarf, Michelle, and the countless others who came and went) cramming into Mikes room that was too small for the6-8 of us there, creating stories together that I still tell to this day, drinking mountain dew & eating pizza until 6am, Getting 2 hours sleep before I had to get up, go home and mow the lawn/do chores.  The list could go on and on and on...Best. Days EVER.

Here is to giving those days to my kids

Our games (as of now)

As stated at the bottom of the last post, here I will list all of our games that we currently own.  If you see one you think we should own, please tell me!  If you would like to see a review of a specific game, let me know!  Our game process is as follows:

  1. I read the instructions and "play" by myself
  2. Athena and I play the game and work out any kinks I may have missed
  3. The whole family plays!

Nothing says nerd more than the sight of a man sitting at a table playing a board game alone! I do have to say, the process works for us so we will keep doing it!  Please feel free to ask any questions you may have about the games as well.  I will answer as best I can or direct you to where you could find the answer!  While all of the games below will be linked to Amazon, please support your local game store if at all possible.  Sometimes they are a bit more expensive, but the staff is typically very knowledgeable about the games and can help with suggestions.  Without further ado, here are our games!

In the beginning....

Hello and Welcome to "A Family that Plays Together!

Before I get started on the whole "gaming" aspect, let me give you some background:

Toward the end of last year, I realized that I wanted to spend more of my free time as family time, but I was unsure on how to do this.  Not long after that, I began watching Wil Wheaton on YouTube and his show "Table Top".  It then dawned on me...Turn my kids into geeks!  I had, of course, exposed them to the typical things any good geek does like, Star Wars, Dr. Who, Comic Books...but now to up the ante!  Starting with Christmas, I began my mission to turn my kids into geeks, and I have to say, it has worked perfectly!

Before Christmas, we had your typical Monopoly, Don't Break the Ice, Clue, Hungry Hippos, Etc.  Since that time, we have continually grown our game library.  Below I will list the games we currently have, and as we add to that, I will post about that.   After a month or so of playing from our list of new games, I decided, what better way to turn my love of family time, board games and writing into something more, than writing a blog!  My main goal is to help other families find games that will best suit them and their kids, and enjoy family time the way I have!  I will be giving you the views of the entire family, from adults to kids, on each game we play.  I will give a simple run-down of each game as well as a review from each of us.  Also, since My beloved and I love to cook so much, we will also include new recipes on game nights and the kids reaction.

So, in that, let me introduce to you the players:
